Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then located numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say early analysis indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.

A senior official said the vandalism made him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
