The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
